Womens 1960s Fashion
A 1960s fancy dress party is one of the most popular theme choices for a celebration. For those lucky to be be invited you'll be pleased to know there is a massive range of 60s costumes to choose from.
In the 1960's there was such a diverse number of trends for the first significant time young people in Britain wanted their own identity and did not want to dress the way their parents did.
The Mini Skirt
The mini-skirt was championed by Mary Quant and was extremely popular with young women. There was the mini shift dress which normally had a sleeveless A-Line shape. This would be worn with tights and Gogo boots.
1964 Space Look
With the advent of space travel from 1964 we started to see it's influence creep into fashion. Designer Andre Courreges developed a strong "space look" . This look was designed using fluorescent colours and shiny fabrics like PVC (PVC was a brand new material at the time). The iconic film Barbarella saw Jane Fonda with this style throughout the movie.
The Mod Dress
Britain led fashion in the mid-1960s, London Modernists or the Mods came up with a great look. Girls had short, clean hairstyles such as the Vidal Sasoon "bob" which is still popular today. Their most iconic look the "Mod dress" was a 2 tone geometric mini shift dress and often worn with a "Baker boy" hat.
Psychedelic 1960s
By 1966 the space age look was superseded as young women were inspired by the top models of the day like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton.
The mini-dress had now become the micro mini dress with long, wide trumpet sleeves and was often made from chiffon or cotton with a psychedelic print.
Some social taboos were relaxed especially relating to sexism and racism which is why this decade is often referred to as the swinging sixties .
Hippie Flair
Flares and bell-bottom are thought of as 1970s but they were first worn in the late 60 s by those in the Hippie movement. Both Men and women wore the same style to give them the androgynous hippy look. This would typically be tie-dyed shirts and tops, flared or bell bottom jeans, a headband and sandals or even no shoes at all.
